Beware of phone snatchers on subway trains

SHANGHAI Metro Police have warned subway riders to take care of their mobile phones, particularly iPhones as the number of thefts is increasing in the subway.

Police said the thieves would target passengers holding a phone in their hand on the train, snatch the phone the moment the carriage doors are about to shut and squeeze through the closing door, leaving the stunned victim in the train.

Passengers are also vulnerable at the gates of a Metro station at night, police said. The subway police have nabbed 232 thieves this year and recovered stolen items worth more than 210,000 yuan. They also handled 12 robbery cases.

The city's 11 Metro lines handle about 6 million riders each day on average. One in every six passengers would be subject to random checks, police said.
