Mom throws boy to his death then falls on him

A MOTHER threw her four-year-old son to his death from a fourth-floor apartment in Shanghai yesterday morning, then jumped too, landing on top of the child. The boy died at the scene in Baoshan District while his 35-year-old mother, surnamed Zhou, broke several bones but was not seriously injured, police said. On Monday, a 29-year-old father killed his 10-month-old son by throwing him from the 14th floor of an apartment block in the city's Minhang District. Afterward he tried to kill himself. Both Zhou and the man have been detained by police. In yesterday's incident, a witness, surnamed Jiang, said she saw Zhou naked on her balcony, holding the child by his feet about 5:15am. Then she let him go and the boy, who was also unclothed, fell from the building on Youyi Road, landing on his head. Although neighbors screamed at her to stop, the woman then jumped, falling onto the body of her son. Witnesses said Zhou was briefly knocked out, but when she regained consciousness they were horrified to see her repeatedly dash her child's head against the ground. "I was woken up by the noise and opened my curtain and was confronted by the most horrible sight I've ever seen in my life," said a businessman, surnamed Chen, who runs a secondhand car company on the ground floor of the building. Hollow eyes "A blood-covered, naked woman was grasping the iron bars outside the windows and staring at us with hollow eyes," said Chen. Police arrived and Zhou was sent to a nearby hospital, repeatedly murmuring to doctors that "my boy turned into a stone." Neighbors said Zhou was a Heilongjiang Province native and a graduate of Shanghai's Fudan University. Her husband is a train crew member who is seldom home. He was said to be returning to Shanghai from Wuhan, Hubei Province, yesterday. The neighbors said Zhou had suffered from depression since her mother died last year, and seldom spoke to anyone. Her husband had asked them to help take care of her. A resident who lives downstairs said Zhou had been throwing objects from her b! alcony f or hours before she dropped her son. "What sounded like her throwing every piece of furniture to the ground started at 2am and kept waking me up," said the resident. "The last noise I heard was when the woman fell and hit a steel pole on my balcony." Neighbors said Zhou sent the boy to kindergarten every day, always carrying him in her arms and seeming to love the child. "Things become strange on Thursday evening as the woman went down to the communal garden where residents meet, which she rarely did, and kept telling neighbors that she had seen ghosts," said a 56-year-old resident surnamed Wang.
