Rare blood patient recovering with timely transfusion

THE 87-year-old Zhang Jingdi has been transferred from the intensive care unit in Zhongshan Hospital to a normal ward this morning after timely blood transfusions helped him to cover from acute post-surgery anemia, his son told Shanghai Daily. Due to his rare blood type, Zhang's life was in grave danger last week when the hospital ran out AB negative blood after he just had a major surgery to remove a tumor in his abdomen and his left kidney as well.

Shanghai Daily ran a story appealing for help from people with the same AB negative blood. More than a dozen foreign readers responded immediately and offered to help. "Again I want to convey my deepest gratitude to those who volunteered to help. Their support has given us strength to make through the difficult times," said his son Zhang Chunyu this morning. Zhang Jingdi is a retired French-language teacher in Shanghai and has been dedicated to charity for more than 20 years, raising about 5 million yuan from foreign donors to help needy people in the city.
